Network cabling installed

I let the network guru know the roof was on and that the network cabling would need to be installed fairly soon so there is no hold up with the rest of the work. Anyway, the cabling was all installed today so it's nice to know that's another thing done!

(One of the double data points)

(Cat6 cabling all coming together)

(One huge network pipe/bundle)

(Termination point in the roof above the coat closet)

That's a lot of cabling. At least the house will be compleatly wired for our home media server and entertainment hub. No need to worry about wireless dropouts or interferences. Solid, gigabit networking is Sooo much nicer.

  1. Hi Stephen, how easy was it to get jg king to allow you to run your own cable?

    1. Hi Luke,

It's not easy if that's what your asking. Generally, your sales consultant will say yes, but if it's not in the contract, the site supervisor will say no.

One thing I will encourage would be to put it in the contract. If it's not in the contract then you'll have a hard time convincing your site supervisor - this does not mean it is impossible to have these installed but in the end, your site supervisor has the final say so to speak.

Firstly, you need to make sure whoever does the installation is fully certified to lay data cabling. Even though it's only Data, they still need to be certified and sign off on the installation.

From the buyers perspective - You are paying the builder Hundreds of thousands of dollars to build your home (on your Land). If you want data to be installed you should be able to get these installed if you really press for it. Try to convince your Site Supervisor that the installation will be done by a professional and will not interfere or delay the build in any way.

From the Site Supervisors perspective - They've been given a job to do that costs Hundreds of thousands of dollars and they need to follow the contract to the letter. If they deviate from it (Like having the owner install network cabling that wasn't in the contract), and something goes wrong, then they are responsible for it.

If it is not in the contract, you may still be able to convince your Site Supervisor to allow the install however, if they continue to refuse, you can always contact the head office and get permission from the Builders to add this to the contract. You will most likely be up for a charge (Roughly $500) for contract variation BUT, depending on if you really, REALLY want it, it may be worth adding.

I know it's not the best of news if you've already signed the contracts but I hope this helps.

    2. Our sales lady was completely useless and no longer works for jg king. I have a variation stating I will meet with the sparky on site to discuss location of power and lighting. We get 2 data points and 3 antenna points included in the contract, so if worse comes to worse we will just have to make do with that. Our house did not have a set electrical llan.

    3. That's a real shame Luke. At least she's no longer there.

It's interesting you didn't get an electrical plan. We did all our electrics prior to finalising the contract. I'm guessing if you get to meet with the electrician, you may be able to ask him to lay extra cables for several other ports as well as extra power points and just pay him directly. After all, he's a contracted Trady who would be looking for extra work. That way you get what you want without having to do a building variation to the contract.

At least it's worth a shot if your wanting it. What stage are you at with your house now?

  2. Frames just gone up, with roof going on next week. Then electrical rough in after that. The site supervisor is very understanding so far, and he is going to call me to arrange a meeting with the sparky on a set date. We did a rough electrical plan with lights and powerpoints, but we were never happy. When we rang them to change it they said we will just put a variation to meet sparky as you will not know 100% where you will want everything until you see it. When I first mentioned it to the site supervisor that I was going to be running my own cable he was a little surprised. I explained the situation of the bbrc house that came with no electrical plan and the fact we had that certain sales person. As soon as I mentioned the saleperson he understood
